The interrupted current can produce a vibration in the electromagnetic field within the light bulb filament or within the switch itself, which can cause a humming or buzzing noise.

Thank you so much for this posting! I had put i the energy saving bulbs and my dimmer switch was buzzing like crazy!

Who would have thought it would be such a simple fix. If changing the light bulbs did not work, I was going to have to call an electrician to figure out what the problem was. The buzzing sound made me nervous like my light switch was going to electrocute me or catch on fire or something. Your posting was so helpful and appreciated! Me too! Thank you soooooo much for the info.

Circular fluoroscent tube. My wife and myself replaced the old tube with a new one. The one made tv pixelate. Not being an electrician but a old chippy. I thought an electrician job. Could this be the problem. I recently switched my lights in my home to LED.

Now in my bedroom light, the lights are constantly buzzing. The thing is, regular application and removal of voltage ends excite and cool the filament. When this happens, it results in the vibrations that are causing that buzzing sound. Rough service bulbs have a more supported filament that reduces the vibration, thereby silencing the buzzing sound.

Need new bulbs to replace your buzzing incandescent bulbs? Reach out to Jaffe Electric today for bulbs and replacement services! Fluorescent lights are known for two things when it comes to common problems — flickering and buzzing. A buzzing fluorescent light may need to be replaced, but it could also be caused by an old ballast. Similar to the buzzing caused in incandescent bulbs, buzzing in fluorescent lights with older ballasts is occurring due to the constant restriking that happens when the ballast is no longer able to regulate voltage properly.

Avoid using a magnetic ballast as these use metal plates that vibrate in addition to an electromagnetic field that generates its own hum. An electrical ballast or a ballast that boasts a class A rating will eliminate the sound. Need professional help replacing the ballast for your fluorescent lights?
